Letter From the President :
Thank you for your interest in Modem Base Pro On-Line DBMS. Thousands of man
hours and years of technology have gone into bringing you a state of the art
communication package and database management system that can be used
effectively and reliably on-line.
When designing Modem Base Pro, several obstacles were at hand. We needed a
DOOR INTERFACE that could be used on a variety of BBS software and various
hardware platforms. Supporting only standard communication ports in a door
software package, just doesn't cut it. Modem Base Pro also includes support
for non-standard communication ports, fossil, and digiboard drivers. Our
DOOR INTERFACE will support most BBS programs and allow you to use
information passed from your BBS to help manage your database on-line.
Prior to the release of Modem Base Pro, the standard response to putting a
database on-line was to purchase a database program, such as Paradox, dBase,
R:BASE, Alpha IV, Clipper or along those lines and use a popular product
such as DOORWAY by Marshall Dudley. Using DOORWAY you could run your DOS
application on-line. This posed several unsurmountable problems for many
Sysops, however. Using DOORWAY, callers needed to operate communication
programs that supported DOORWAY MODE and most programs that SHIP from modem
manufacturers DO NOT. There was a severe learning curve involved and often
about a half hour of intervention from the Sysop was needed to get an
inexperienced caller up to speed. Additional problems of security were
often a fatal issue. Sysops found it difficult to utilize information from
DOOR system files. It was very hard to restrict access to certain data and
in most cases the projects were canned after wasting countless dollars and
man hours.
Enter Modem Base Pro. Modem Base Pro supports ANSI and NON-ANSI graphic
callers and offers a LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR approach in which to build
upon as a solution to these problems. Modem Base Pro interacts directly
with your BBS software to offer security at a variety of levels by keeping
track of who owns which record in the database. The Sysop has complete
customizational control of the database. Modem Base Pro is not intended to
replace your existing database management programs, but supplement them by
offering an on-line interface to new or existing databases. Modem Base
Pro ADAPTS to your database dynamically offering virtually unlimited
potential and flexibility.
The future of Modem Base Pro is also exciting. As you read this we are
hard at work developing Release 2.0. Some things on the development list
are high speed indexed searches, query/filter builder with enhanced search,
a Stand-Alone Host and communication package, stronger RIP GRAPHICS support,
and much, much more!
Developing Modem Base Pro is exciting for us. We had no other competing
on-line product in which to compare a standard to. In essence, we created
our own standard which, using our Modem Base Composer, can "hand hold" a
Sysop into putting a database on-line with minimal DBMS skills, but remain
powerful enough for even the advanced programmer and maintain full dBase III
compatibility. Based on the tremendous positive response from our customers
using Modem Base Pro, we have accomplished our goals set forth for our
current release. We look forward to the evolution of Modem Base Pro and
it's emergence in the industry as a leading on-line DBMS product.
Welcome to the Modem Base Pro family.
Sincerely
James M. Pierce
